Union Building Tree Ornament

Union Building. Each ornament sculpture is framed within a circular laurel wreath that measures 2 1/2 inches in diameter. The entire ornament measures 31/2 x 31/2 inches. A metal hook is attached to the top through which a ribbon is threaded. The ornament includes a stand that is suitable for display. It is eloquently packaged in a black velvet lined 4 1⁄4 inch square box. This and subsequent ornaments are “must haves” for those who love the beautiful historic buildings of downtown Calumet.

The Calumet & Hecla Mining Company provided the land for the construction of the Union Building in 1888. The building served as a transition between the company’s copper mines and Calumet’s commercial district. “Union” did not refer to organized labor, which C&H management despised, but to the partnership between two of the community’s oldest benevolent societies, the Free and Accepted Masons and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. For over eighty years this building’s upper two floors served as a meeting place for benevolent organizations. The first floor was available for commercial business. In 1999 Keweenaw National Historical Park purchased the Union Building. The park service began a 1.9 million dollar exterior renovation of the building in April of 2005. Restoration today is not quite complete as new window installation as well as interior work is still required.
